What the rollout means for garages

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency began the national rollout on 3 August 2026, giving an additional 2,500 garages across Great Britain access to Photos at Test. The feature is for MOT testers to photograph a vehicle at the time of its test. The notice applies to England, Scotland and Wales.

Access is being introduced in phases. If a garage was not included in this phase, it does not need to take action to join it; the notice says it will receive access at a later date. It does not give a date for each garage’s access.

How testers can use it

A tester can register the vehicle and take the photo on a mobile device, or start registration on a desktop and scan a QR code with a mobile device. The image uploads directly to the MOT Testing Service, not the device’s camera roll or gallery.

Taking and uploading a photo is currently optional. If a tester cannot or does not upload one, they can select the most appropriate reason in the service and still record the MOT result. The photo feature supports existing MOT processes; it does not replace any part of the inspection.
