Which vehicles the manual covers

The manual sets out inspection processes and rules for car, private bus and light commercial vehicle MOT tests in classes 3, 4, 5 and 7. The page says it applies in England, Scotland and Wales and provides guidance for Northern Ireland.

Motorcycles, heavy goods vehicles and public service vehicles have separate inspection manuals. If you are looking up a test requirement, first check that you have the manual for your vehicle type.

What inspectors may examine

The contents span vehicle identification, brakes, steering, visibility, lamps and electrical equipment, then axles, wheels, tyres and suspension. Later sections cover body and structure, seat belts and other equipment, noise, exhaust emissions and fluid leaks.

The contents page also lists supplementary checks for buses and coaches, plus seat belt installation checks for a specified group of vehicles. Use the relevant manual section for the detailed inspection rule; this overview alone does not establish the result for a particular vehicle.

Practical guidance

For owners, the practical distinction is vehicle scope: a manual for cars and light commercial vehicles is not the right reference for every vehicle category. Check the vehicle class and type against the manual’s coverage before relying on a specific inspection rule.
